426-YARD RUSH ATTACK POWERS LOBOS PAST BALL, 49-7
LONGVIEW - Longview tuned up for its District 13-5A opener next week with a 49-7 whipping of the Galveston Ball Tors here friday night at Lobo Stadium.

The Lobos host Tyler Lee next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Longview improves to 3-0 on the year, while Ball remains winless at 0-3.

A 426-yard ground attack paced by senior tailback Earnest Hunter's 140 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns powered Longview's attack. The 5'10, 200-pound back sat down the remainder of the game following the team's first series of the second half.

Hunter, who ran to three first half scores a week ago in a 34-8 win over Fort Worth Trimble Tech, again paved the assault with a trio of touchdowns in the opening two periods.

The Lobos also got backup support off the bench as Todd Dauper ran in from 19 yards early in the fourth quarter, and then Jason Dodson tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Kim Wallace to close out the scoring.

Quarterback Kevin Madden expanded Longview's 28-7 half-time advantage when he score on a 2-yard keeper with 7:07 to play in the third quarter.

Dauper's touchdown completed a 67-yard, 6-play drive early in the fourth at the 9:54 mark. Kyle Cook converted the point-after.

Dodson's strike to Wallace came with 3:26 to play.

Defensively, Longview's defense held Ball to 115 yards on the ground. Quarterback Mike Cridland, despite his three interceptions, completed 9 of 26 for 128 yards and one touchdown.

Longview took advantage of three Ball miscues in the first half, including a fumble and a pair of Cridland interceptions. Cridland threw three in the game, all picked off by defensive back Selwyn Broughton who now has four for the season.

On the Tors' first play from scrimmage after the Lobos kicked off, Isaac Benefield lost the handle after a 5-yard gain and Fred Woods recovered for Longview.

It just took one handoff to Hunter, who broke through the middle of the Tor defense for 17 yards and the Lobos quickly broke the ice. Dean Malone connected on the point-after with 11:38 left in the first frame.

Longview's defense then took over and Ball was forced to punt. Punter Gabe Peterek's attempt only traveled 18 yards and the Lobos took possession at the Tors' 35.

Hunter would need just three carries before racing into the end zone from 23 yards out.
