LONGVIEW - John Tyler’s Lions notched their first District 8-4A triumph with a come fro behind 8-7 decision over Longview’s Lobos Friday night at Lobo Stadium.
After tailing 7-0 for over 46 minutes of the total 48 minutes playing time, quarterback Alvin Flynn tossed a seven yard pas to right end Jimmy Wells for a touchdown. The Lion’s scoring play came with only 1:16 showing on the clock.
Wells then switched into the backfield, took a handoff from Flynn and eluded his way around left end for the two point conversion that virtually gave the Lions a victory.
The Flynn to Wells combination baffled the Lobos, who held the Lions to a minimum on the ground. Halfback John Ritley raced 41 yards for the best Lion run of the night.
Wells pulled in five aerials from Flynn, good for 99 yards, including receptions of 24, 28, 27, 13 and seven yards. Longview also had a fine receiver in end Terry Don Phillips, who caught five passes from quarterback James Street for 47 yards.
Longview took advantage on an early break in the first quarter for its score. Doug Wyatt of John Tyler fumbled after returning a punt nine yards and Longview guard Jimmy Molphus recovered on the John Tyler 26.
It took the Lobos eight plays to score with end Mike Pugh taking a nine yard pass from Street and falling over the goal line. Ronald Cook, who is listed on the program as “K” for kicker, split the uprights for the extra point.
The determined Lobos threatened two more times in the first half before the Lions could move the ball past midfield. However, the John Tyler defense halted a march on its 35 when tackle Earl Maxfield intercepted a Street pass. Another Lobo drive went to John Tyler’s one but Longview ran out of downs.
John Tyler took to the air in the waning 1:12 of the second quarter and moved from its own 20 to the Longview 13 before time ran out.
It was all John Tyler in the second half. The Lions held possession of the ball for most of the time and twice moved deep into Longview territory without scoring.
Midway through he third quarter the Lions marched 69 yards from their own 11 to Longview’s 20. But a fumble there was recovered by Longview’s guard Ron Sanford.
With 5:50 left in the game the Lobos took over possession at their own six after they had stopped a Lion threat.
The winning John Tyler march started from Longview’s 44. Flynn completed two 13 yard passes to Wyatt and Wells, then hit halfback Donnie Gentry with a 15 harder that gave the Lions a first down on the Lobo four yard line. Three plays later Wells pulled in a pass from Flynn for the touchdown.
Ripley was the game’s leading ground gainer as he picked up 70 yards on ten carries. Fullback Maxie Clark added 16 yards for the Lions by toting the load 13 times.
Fullback Glen Cobb was the Lobo workhorse with 66 yards on 17 carries. Cook, who ran at halfback for the first time, gained 36 yards in ten tries.
The “sweet” come from behind win for the Lions put John Tyler back on the winning side for the season. John Tyler stands at 5-4-0 as compare to Longview’s 3-6-0 reading. Both are tied in loop play with 1-3-0 marks.
