PLAYOFF BERTH CLINCHED IN 28-19 WIN OVER LIONS
TYLER - Longview's defense got going early in the night, and Jalen Carr finished it.

Carr led another scratch-and-claw effort from the Lobo defense as Longview walked away with a 28-19 win over John Tyler in a crucial District 11-6A game at Rose Stadium in Tyler.

With the win, Longview (7-1, 4-1) clinches a playoff berth and is in the driver's seat for the top seed in Division II in 11-6A heading into the final two games of the regular season. John Tyler drops to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in district play.

JC Blakemore scored the first points of the night on a safety, jump starting another bend but not break night for the Lobos.

Carr, who was named the Great American Rivalry Series MVP, blocked a point-after attempt and a field goal and added a sack to a key interception, his sixth of the season and fifth in the last three games.

"(Jalen) is a heck of a player and it makes you wonder why it took us so long to move him to cornerback with the production we've gotten," Longview head coach John King said. "The pick he made on our sideline was big time and one heck of a play out of him.

"He's an effort kid and will give you everything he's got every down."

Longview's defense held John Tyler to 100 yards rushing on 29 attempts, had a turnover on downs at the Longview 30-yard line and held John Tyler to six second-half points.

Ja'Vontae Writt scooped and scored after Carr blocked a point-after attempt and Jaylon Allen recovered a fumble.

Offensively, John Tyler outgained Longview in total yards, 336-290.

Keilyn Williams finished with 69 yards and a pair of touchdowns, teaming with Jaquan Edwards, who finished with 70 yards on 14 carries, as the Lobo offense gutted out enough runs to keep the clock moving.

"I thought we ran the ball well at times and had negative plays at times but that's John Tyler," King said. "We ran it well enough to maintain possession and keep the sticks moving."

Haynes King finished 7-for-18 passing for 122 yards and a touchdown for Longview, who led at halftime, 18-13.

A'Darius Carter had a 40-yard touchdown reception, his 11th overall score of the season. Jaylin Brown hauled in three passes for 60 yards.

Chris Kessler connected on a career-best 47-yard field goal.

After a punt from Longview to open the game, a 42-yard kick from Kessler that pinned John Tyler at its seven, Blakemore forced a fumble and made the tackle in the end zone for a 2-0 Longview lead.

Two plays later, King connected with Carter for a 40-yard score and a 9-0 Longview lead.

John Tyler answered right back on an eight-play, 66-yard drive.

After a pick from King, Allen scooped up a John Tyler fumble, setting up a six-play, 40-yard score with Williams punching in a one-yard touchdown.

With 4:39 left in the second quarter, John Tyler pulled to within three points, 16-13, on Tre Allison's second touchdown run. Carr got a hand on the point-after attempt and Writt took it to the house for an 18-13 Longview lead at halftime.

Carr had a tackle for loss on John Tyler's drive to open the third quarter and the Lobos, aided again by Lion penalties, extended their lead to 21-13 on Kessler's 47-yard boot.

Kevion Bush had a tackle for a short gain on third and seven, an area John Tyler finished 3-for-9 in, and the Lobo defense got a stop on fourth and six for a turnover on downs.

After Longview's fourth punt of the night, Carr picked off a John Tyler pass, setting up runs of six, seven and, for his second touchdown, 18 yards from Williams for a 28-13 lead.

John Tyler answered quickly again on a 26-yard touchdown pass on third down but a failed snap kept it a two-possession game.

The Lobos again punted quickly and John Tyler converted two third downs and a fourth down before a swarm of Lobos made a third-and-eight stop at the nine-yard line. Carr then blocked the ensuing kickoff attempt.

Edwards spun for a four-yard gain on third and King had a 23-yard run on third-and-11 to send the Lobos into victory formation for the seventh straight time against John Tyler at Rose Stadium.

Longview hosts Rockwall-Heath next while John Tyler visits Mesquite Horn.
